Sudan is an area in Africa that is torn between the Northern Muslim and Arab groups and the ethnic groups in the South. Throughout the entire history of Sudan, there has always been some sort of crisis, whether it is international or civil. Eight years ago, the United States released a missile attack on Khartoum, because they believed that Sudan was cooperating with Al'Qaeeda. In 2001, hunger and famine affect 3 million people through out Sudan. Perhaps it is the governments fault for not trying to control the conflicts in Sudan. Tom Allen agrees, saying, "Despite the increase in world attention toward Sudan in the past months, the genocide in Darfur has continued without any serious attempt by the Sudanese government to do what governments primarily exist to do; protect their citizens." Government or not, there has still been mass killings in Darfur, Khartoum, Nyala, and the rest of Sudan. People can help, but it all depends on if we work hard in order to put a stop to poverty in Sudan.
We decided to choose to focus on Southern Sudan because not many people and the media know about this area and this area is in the same amount of crisis as Darfur. Though Darfur is still facing a lot of conflicts and needs support, Southern Sudan needs support too. Darfur has faced terrible conflicts but more people know about it and the media and more people know about Darfur. The media and people do not know much of Southern Sudan, this is why we chose to help and save the people in crisis there. Our group decided to help build and support a vocational school in Khartoum which helps Southern Sudanese with carpentry, tailoring, printing, and other crafts. By doing so, we can help people start careers and eventually have a stable salary. Hopefully this can help Southern Sudanese people out of poverty, and eventually, all of Sudan.
Mercy Corps is an outstanding organization that has helped many people that are suffering. They have come up with multiple plans and programs to help people for different causes. One of the projects they have been working on is helping refugees in Darfur and other affected areas in Sudan. Mercy Corps mainly supplies people with basic necessities by getting them water, health services, household supplies, and shelter. Mercy Corps has also built many schools and houses Sudanese people. Mercy Corps has a number of other projects that try to educate people and promote peace and happiness. One of these organizations, "Sports for Peace and Life", is a sport-based program that helps stop and prevent young adults from getting HIV/AIDs. Mercy Corps has been doing work all around the world and their projects have were shown to be very successful. Knowing this, we are positive that their work in Sudan will be the same.
What We like About Mercy Corps
What we really like about this organization is that they stick to their plan and actually go through with it.They actually can get the needed materials to the refugees. Mercy Corps also has had many successful projects and plans to solve Global Issues. Our group also likes that they have a variety of projects that covering a lot of different global issues. They are focusing in many areas and have helped the people in different ways such as helping them with economic issues, donating supplies, preventing epidemics, building schools and shelter, and much more. Mercy Corps has helped many lives and has started many lives for people in poverty.
How We Plan to be Involved
Due to the fact that Mercy Corps has had many successful projects, our group plans to model our action plan after some of the work that they have done. We hope to spread awareness about the work that Mercy Corps is doing, and through that get more people to want to help. If we send money to organizations in Sudan like Mercy Corps, then we can hopefully make the same impact that they are making. See our Action Plan for more information.
